Bought a Pentax K1000 at an estate sale last month for not very much money. It’s the kind of purchase I tell myself is “just to try it” and then I’m buying another five rolls of film. You know how this goes.
The K1000 is the camera people keep recommending to beginners because it’s a good beginner camera, which is also what it is to me: I am a beginner at film. The light meter works (a miracle), the shutter sounds right, and the lens is fine. I shot a roll of Portra 400 over a week or so.
Some are soft, a few are underexposed, and the last frame on the roll is a double exposure because I don’t know what I’m doing. I’m going to keep going. The best part about film, I’m finding, is that you can’t look at the back of the camera — so you either commit or walk away.
