I started doing this because I had a stretch of mornings where I was awake early and didn’t have anywhere to be until 10. I’d walk to a different cafe each day, sit with a notebook, take one or two photos when the light was doing something.

What surprised me is how much character these places have in the twenty minutes after they open. Once the morning rush hits, they all look the same. Before it, they’re distinct.

I won’t list which cafes. They’re all still open and busy; they don’t need more people at 7 a.m.
